Photos of the Day: Total Solar Eclipse at the HMP RS: August 1, 2008
As some of you know, a very rare total solar eclipse passed directly over the Haughton-Mars Project (HMP) Research Station on Devon Island, High Arctic, on August 1 at 4:25 am CDT. The totality lasted 1 minute and 41 seconds. See below for links to some dramatic video footage, including live streaming video commentary by yours truly!
Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate in the least bit! The cloud coverage was so thick that it was eerily dark hours before the eclipse. Nevertheless, HMP participants were awakened before totality and happily flocked to a good viewing spot over looking the expansive Mars-like landscape.
Although the eclipse was hidden by clouds, the 1 minute and 41 seconds of total darkness was very dramatic for those of us who have been in 24 hour daylight for multiple weeks!
Below are links to eclipse videos taken at the HMP Research Station, a written account of the eclipse by Dr. Pascal Lee, and (soon to come) a science report about a solar eclipse radio frequency experiment:

One of the HMP scientists, Bill Atwood from Morehead State University, did some radio frequency observations that did not require clear skies.

Those were awesome videos! The two with the music were mesmerizing. I'm sorry the clouds "rained" on your parade, but it looks like you still got good footage (and maybe even some good science with the radio receiver).
